As world population grows so does the demand for food - but how will we grow enough to feed all these people, without further harming the planet?
Our ultimate goal is to find solutions to this very urgent global challenge.
What sets us apart
We view science as a continuum, from blue skies to green fields, and we span both - supported by unique capabilities and interdisciplinary teams and strengthened by partnerships in 50 countries. Strategic research is the tool to confront complex problems, and our systems approach is the only way to achieve the highly productive but environmentally-benign farming and food innovations the world desperately needs.
The placements are located at:
Harpenden, Hertfordshire. Our main 33 Ha site and home to the ‘Classical’ agricultural experiments started by our founder Sir John Lawes in 1843.
Brooms Barn, Suffolk, where we have 77Ha.
Typical duties will include field plot work, commercial cropping and estate maintenance, plus some office administration work. The successful applicant will gain experience of working with dedicated small plot machinery such as drills and combines and using GPS technologies to site trials, alongside the usual larger scale machinery used in commercial cropping. Experience of operating the machines is not a pre-requisite as both “on the job” and formal training will be provided.
This position can be tailored to your interests slightly e.g. workshop work, crop walking with the agronomist or attendance at several agronomy events through the year. The basic salary will be £16,000 per year and paid overtime will be needed in the busy periods.
Accommodation is not provided.
