Job Details

Herdsperson
Ilminster, Somerset – Ref: SOweb2407

We have a new contract vacancy for an enthusiastic person to take over from an excellent long-serving herdsperson who is retiring, and to join a family farm near Ilminster, Somerset.

This mixed farming operation has 1,000 acres to include a 300-cow herd of Holstein Friesian cows calving all year round and yielding 9,000 litres with good components on twice a day milking via a 14 x 28 DeLaval herringbone parlour, with auto ID, ACR’s, backflush and in parlour feeders to go along with out of parlour feeders.

While cows are housed in a mix of cubicles and loose housing, they receive an easy feed ration of grass and maize silage, with conventional grazing during summer months.

The appointed person will take day-to-day control of the herd to include twice per day milking, calvings, heat detection and AI, drying off as required and overseeing fortnightly vet visits, with relevant paperwork via a daily diary.  AI qualifications are a bonus, but not required as training can be provided.  Foot trimming can be outsourced as required.

A competitive package to go along with a 3-bedroom mid-terraced cottage with large garden, in the village, is on offer.
