Arable Manager - Somerset

A progressively-minded estate with an illustrious history is seeking an Arable Manager who holds a strong philosophy on sustainable agriculture. You will have practical experience of managing an arable operation. You will embrace new farming technologies and progressive practices/ideas as well as being equally at home sat on a tractor. With all of this in mind, you will also be mindful of traditional methods.

As the estate moves towards securing its fully organic status, this is a prime opportunity for an ambitious Farm Manager (either in their first farm management role or more experienced) who thinks progressively.

What your role will involve:

  • Optimising yields of a range of crops (including barley and heritage crops)
  • Consult and lead on technological innovations across the arable operation
  • Contribute to the delivery and implementation of strategic farm business plans
  • Undertake practical activities, such as driving tractors, operating machinery
  • Carry out arable operations including baling, mowing, grain and straw hauling, fertiliser spreading, ploughing and cultivations
  • Plan staffing to meet business needs
  • Ensure that farm activities comply with government regulations
  • Apply health and safety standards across the farm estate
  • Protect the environment and maintaining biodiversity
  • In conjunction with the book keeper, assist in maintaining financial records
  • Keep abreast of government grants / subsidy schemes and submit applications

What you will have:

  • Degree level qualification or equivalent in agriculture (or related field)
  • Practical 'hands on' farming experience
  • High level of technical ability embracing progressive thinking
  • Good numeracy and IT literacy
  • Solid grasp of farm compliance schemes
  • Strong communication skills (both publicly and within the estate team)
