We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to lead on the machinery, reserve infrastructure and arable operations as part of the RSPB's Wiltshire Chalk Country reserves and support the RSPB’s Ecology and Land Management team delivering habitat contract work across the UK.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking to develop their tractor operation and estate management skills and broaden this skill-set, and provide a stepping-stone towards a future warden post or towards a more specialist machinery contracting role.

About the Role
They will play an active part in RSPB's work in reconnecting the landscape in the Wiltshire Chalk Country for the stone-curlew and iconic chalk downland wildlife, from corn buntings and lapwings to green-winged orchids and Adonis blue butterflies. The role will provide support to RSPB Ecology and Land Management via their machinery usage across a range of machines in many different habitats.  This aspect will require regular time working away from the reserve base.

Based at RSPB Winterbourne Downs the postholder will be responsible for the arable plot cultivations, hedge and scrub management, maintaining footpath and nature trails, fencing and built infrastructure at the reserve. The role will require regular weeks away working with RSPB Ecological Land Management for a range of clients across the UK. They will work with an experienced team of people delivering all aspects of habitat management, from heathland to wetlands. They will be required to use specialist machinery to carry out a range of operations from ‘cut and collect’, to full wetland restoration using ‘spoil spreaders’ in challenging ground conditions.

What we need from you:
Essential skills include:

  • You will have knowledge and experience of practical habitat and estate management.
  • Experience of operating and maintaining machinery, equipment and infrastructure. Particularly relevant are use of 4X4 vehicles, tractor and cultivation implements, hedge-cutter, tractor mounted or drawn sprayer, brush-cutters and chainsaw.
  • Lantra or equivalent qualification in ATV, chainsaw, tractor, brushcutter, pesticides (PA1, PA2, PA6).
  • Knowledge of servicing and maintaining vehicles, machinery, tools and equipment to agreed standards.
  • You will have a proven track record of working of completing work alone and working within a varied team.
  • Have the capacity and circumstance to work away from home on occasion.
  • Full driving licence.

Desirable qualifications, knowledge, skills and experience:

  • Reasonable birdwatching knowledge and experience of biological surveys
  • Comfortable managing volunteers from a range of backgrounds
  • Livestock management
  • Trailer driving experience
  • An ability to communicate with the farming community.
  • Implementing and updating health and safety records and assessments.
