Job Details

Herdsperson, 600 cows

This family farm is situated near Marlborough Wiltshire and requires a herdsperson to join a team of 6 led by the Herd Manager, with additional support from other farm staff during busier times. The farm consists of 1700ac of varied sites with mixed farm practices run by modern and up to date machinery.

Maximising days grazing (338 days in 2022) is an important part of the business, this farm is recognised for excellent grass management and is Wiltshire contributor to AHDB forage for knowledge newsletter. A strong emphasis of grazed grass and a very good infrastructure and cow track network exists across the grazing platform to paddocks.

The herd consists of 600 grazing type cows in a split block system, to satisfy a Cadbury’s milk contract. A tight 9-week block on the Autumns and aiming >6 weeks for Springs. All calves are retained and reared on farm.

With springs being out wintered on fodder beet, a large loose housing system for calving and grazing from February through till December.
Autumns are housed during winter in cubicles fed a basic TMR and aiming for 10 months grazing from mid-late January through till October, with dry cow period and calving on a basic standing hay system.

Milking through a basic 36/72 and in parlour batch feeders. Milking is a two person operation usually with extra support in busy peak times. Emphasis is on efficient milking routine and time. The herds will be on variable milking after they’ve peaked using a 10in7 milking and OAD late lactation on the Spring herd.

The farm achieves fantastic fertility results with use of vets for after calving checks and closely monitored pregnancy scanning during serving resulting in >10% empty rates.

The position is a milking role, keeping high standards and attention to detail a must, with other tasks being basic yard work, scraping of cubicles and bedding with milled straw using a small loader type machine to make this job easy to do, bedding of straw yards when being used and TMR feeding. Other tasks include assisting with vet visits, feeding of new-born calves and protocols untill taking to calf accommodation, and keeping a parlour and machinery tidy and maintained.

We will encourage you to be involved in local discussion groups, with other like-minded farms and similar systems.

AI and foot trimming would be an advantage but isn’t essential, as ongoing training and progression is pushed by the Herd Manager and farm owner to get the best out of the team involved.

A good package is available with 100-days off per year, aiming for 5 day working week where possible, with a 3-bedroom house, large garden and garage on farm available, two local schools, garage with shop, local pub and amenities a 10-minute drive away.
