The Farmers’ Union of Wales was established in 1955 to protect and advance the interests of Welsh farming families.  Since 1978 the Union’s role has been formally recognised by the UK Government and subsequently by the Welsh Government.

The FUW’s Vision is thriving, sustainable, family farms in Wales, while the Mission of the Union is To advance and protect Wales’ family farms, both nationally and individually, in order to fulfil the Union’s vision

The union is now seeking a new Head of Policy to lead its Agricultural Policy Department due to the retirement of the current Head of Policy.

The successful applicant will have a thorough knowledge and understanding of agricultural policy, ideally with a focus on Wales, including the roles played by Wales’ devolved administration, the UK Government and global trade in influencing farming and rural affairs.

They will be responsible for the day to day management of all policy department staff and the administration of the Policy Department.  In addition the Head of Policy will also take charge of key policy areas based on their experience, background and expertise.

They will work alongside FUW staff in seeking to further the interests of the Union and its membership, including through the maintenance and development of relationships with Senedd Members, Members of Parliament and other organisations and stakeholders.

Applicants should have excellent verbal and written skills and be educated to a degree level or higher. The ability to communicate in Welsh is desirable.

Where suitable, the successful applicant may choose to work remotely from home or from one of the FUW’s thirteen offices located throughout Wales and will also be expected to be present in person for a minimum number of meetings with policy staff and others at the union’s Head Office near Aberystwyth, Ceredigion.
