An opportunity has arisen for either a herd manager or senior herdsperson to join an established team of permanent staff with a milking herd of 520 Holsteins supplying Arla on a Tesco’s contract. This is a new position in the team; the role would be to work alongside the farm owner in the running of the herd. The successful candidate will take day to day responsibility of the cows, milking routine, herd health and welfare.
Candidates will need to demonstrate attention to detail within the herd and increase herd productivity from within a team culture. Ability to maintain good record keeping, completion of the day book, medical records to enable transfer of information onto the computer software, so computer literacy is required. Candidates need to be able to think for themselves, motivate and communicate well with other team members alongside good communication with the owner. An important factor as part of this role is take pride in your work and workplace with a passion and dedication for the herd and ability to treat the cows and farm as your own.
The farm is 850 acres, 300 acres of grassland and 550 acres maize and cereals which are fed back to the cows. Cows calve all year round and yielding 10,000 litres, on three times daily milking. Total mixed ration feeding is practiced, no feeding in the parlour. Milking is through a 30:30 GEA herringbone milking parlour with automatic identification, wireless heat detection and health monitoring, backing gate and auto segregation. Milking cows are cubicle housed in a new modern range of buildings with mattresses and are housed in lactation groups. Dry cows and pre-calver’s are in straw yards as are youngstock.
This senior herdsperson will be part of daytime milking, dealing with cow mobility issues between visits of the hoof trimmer, and perform AI alongside other team members. This herdsperson will need be proactive with herd health including fertility, mobility, herd cleanliness and other on farm high standards.
