Herdsperson in Dorset Ref 2250
Our client is seeking a herdsperson to carry out the routine milking and joint responsibilities on their family-run farm.
There are 230 pedigree Ayrshires & Ayrshire X cows and followers, which are cared for too high standards and therefore are looking for someone with a similar view on cow management, breeding and cow families. Based near Gillingham in North Dorset, the herd at the moment calve in two blocks which are 1/3 spring and 2/3 autumn. The emphasis on this farm is milk from forage and high constituents with long-lasting cows. The family also have other businesses they run, so looking for someone to take on some responsibility here.
Looking for someone to work ’with us not for us,‘ in a team operation.
Could ideally be an enthusiastic person, perhaps someone looking for a step up from a current Assistant herdsperson role; which would include milking, cow care and be part of the decision making with the owner. They also have a very good relief milker who covers certain shifts when required.
The farm is located close to local towns, amenities and schools.
The current work pattern includes every other weekend off and alternates Mondays as well, but they can be flexible with a suitable applicant to make it work for all parties.
The successful applicant will be:
- competent at milking
- yard work
- AI & foot trimming interest preferred, with training provided if someone is enthusiastic to complete
- heat detection
Family house in a neighbouring town about 4 miles from the farm, but looking to source one closer within 2 miles
This is a contract position, where the successful person will operate as an agency worker with Farm Solutions. This means that the person will not have sub-contractor responsibilities and all statutory tax deductions and payments will be made by Farm Solutions on their behalf. Hourly pay operates, which includes pay for overtime hours worked.
