We have a contract vacancy for an experienced Herd manager to take full day-to-day responsibility of an all grass farm milking 300 spring calving cows utilising grass to the fullest extent.
This farm is in Raglan and part of a bigger farm enterprise, comprising 800 acres with 2 dairy herds totalling 600 cows. One unit operated by the farmer and this one stand alone.
This spring calving herd of 300 NZ style Friesian cows are milked via a 16 x 32 parlour with co pulsation and in parlour feeders and all cows dried off for December and January.
The appointed person will be a fully experienced herd manager with spring block calving experience and good grassland management skills to include paddock management and plate metering. You will be expected to manage the farm and herd without supervision with an assistant and two relief milkers, control all contractors to attend and be proactive in weekly meetings with the owner who is not on site.
Having experience of all herd health issues, to include some foot trimming, and good fertility and AI skills with good record keeping is beneficial but all can be trained.
You must be self-motivated to improve all aspects of this already well managed farm with particular emphasis on milk quality at this time.
This position could lead to a share farming agreement in the future if all goes in the right direction.
A 3-bedroom semi-detached house, on farm, will go along with a good salary and regular time off.
