Hours: Permanent, Full time 5 days a week with livestock checks at weekends.

The Miserden Estate has an exciting opportunity for the role head shepherd for its expanding sheep enterprise. The enterprise consists of a breeding flock of 1200 Mule ewes, lambing indoor in early March, providing finished lambs, stores and flock replacements.

The role involves day-to day management of the flock including the following responsibilities:

The role
- Accurate record keeping for livestock including movement, flock genetics, medical treatment and other legal requirements.
- A strong understanding of the science behind a successful sheep enterprise including parasite identification and prevention, feed conversion rates and managing grassland dry matter output.
- Diligently monitor livestock to ensure welfare is continued to a high standard.
- All aspects of animal husbandry including breeding programmes, fertility planning and ensuring nutrition for both growing lambs and breeding stock.
- Field work including grassland management and fencing.
- Be competent in buying stock and selecting lambs for replacements / sale.

The candidate
This is an opportunity to be part of an expanding Estate team in a hands on position. The role will be suited to an experienced head shepherd or assistant with a strong work ethic and ability to step up and run the
enterprise. Key attributes will include:

- Reliable and trustworthy with an attention for detail.
- Good record keeping skills. Must be numerate and computer literate.
- Enthusiasm for their work and the ability to work un-supervised.
- The treatment of health and safety as a priority.
- Full UK driving licence and tractor experience.
- Own dogs advantageous but not essential.
- Diploma in Agriculture valuable but not essential.

The Estate will provide continued personal development for the appointed shepherd, supporting training and relevant courses.
