- Shadwell Stud
Purchased in 1984, Shadwell Estate in Norfolk (originally a 6,000-acre country estate) is now the UK base for one of the best regarded bloodstock operations in the world.
The original studs were Melton Paddocks and Snarehill Stud. Shortly after purchase, Melton Paddocks was modernised and refurbished and is now used for housing Shadwell’s private broodmares and their foals during the Northern Hemisphere breeding season.
Snarehill Stud was developed as a rehabilitation centre for a growing string of racehorses in Europe. With state of the art facilities such as tread mills, horse walkers, a spa and a swimming pool, Snarehill has become one of the leading private rehabilitation centres in Europe, where special care can be given to each horse as an individual; enabling it to return to training and racing at a pace that is optimal and comfortable for them.
Other farms in the UK group include Elmswell, Salsabil and Beech House Stud and each is home to a number of Shadwell’s elite band of broodmares and their progeny.
Since its construction in 1987, The Nunnery Stud has been home to some of the world’s greatest racehorses and most influential stallions.
Probably the most famous resident of The Nunnery Stud was the now sadly deceased GREEN DESERT; a son of DANZIG born in 1983, he is widely recognised to be one of the most influential sires of modern times. He was a Leading First Season Sire in 1990 and the sire with the most winners on the Flat in the UK in 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997 and 1999.
During his career, he has produced no less than 19 individual Gr. 1 winners and world class sires such as OASIS DREAM, CAPE CROSS and INVINCIBLE SPIRIT.
Other famous stallions to have stood at the Nunnery Stud include 1989 Epsom Derby winner NASHWAN; King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes winner UNFUWAIN and 2001 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner SAKHEE.
